It’s beginning to seem like no correspondence is safe from the watchful eye of the NSA. Top-secret documents reveal that the National Security Agency has been indiscriminately sweeping up text messages from across the globe--nearly 200 million a day--with the purpose of obtaining locations, credit card information, and contact networks. The SMS collection program, codenamed “Dishfire,” is the latest revelation to come out of the documents leaked by Edward Snowden and investigated by the Guardian and the UK’s Channel 4 News. On top of text messages, this program allowed the NSA to track missed-call alerts, network roaming notifications which alert them to border crossings, electronic business cards and financial transactions.
