Kurt Masur, the German conductor who transformed the New York Philharmonic, died on Saturday. He was 88. Masur, who held the title of music director emeritus at the time of his death, directed the orchestra from 1992 to 2002. During his tenure, Masur reinvigorated the Philharmonic, making it once again a world-class ensemble.
