A babysitter who “systematically” tortured and killed a 17-month-old boy from Staten Island was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison on Tuesday, according to NBC New York. Gloria Fields, 32, pleaded guilty earlier this month to first-degree murder in the February 2016 death of Anthony Delgado, who was returned to his mother “bruised and unconscious.” Prosecutors claimed Fields slammed the child’s head to the ground, shook him, and sexually abused him “with a pencil”—resulting in injuries everywhere but his feet. NBC reports that Delgado’s mother left the child with Fields, who was a neighbor, for a weekend. Fields texted the mother that Delgado “fell” two days later and the mother found the child heavily injured upon return, authorities said. An autopsy of Delgado concluded that he died of “blunt-force injuries.”
