Shootings in New York City have been increasing over the last two years while homicides by gunfire have surged this year, New York Police Chief James P. O’Neill said at a press conference Monday. Of the 135 homicides in May, 98 were gun-related, up from the 69 similar killings at this point in 2013 and in 2014. O’Neill said the NYPD will begin deploying 330 extra officers next week in an effort to crack down on the nearly 20 percent increase in killings and an almost 9 percent surge in shootings over the last year. The deployment is part of the city’s so-called All Out program, which began last July and will be rolled out a month early with the uptick in violence.
