On Thursday, the NYC Council will be discussing a proposal by the warehouse's owners to convert the privately owned building, which attracts artists and gawkers with its brightly decorated facade, into a $400 million housing project. The two towers, including artists' studios and affordable apartments, would be the tallest in Queens. "The truth is there was not a way to save the building," Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer said of the proposal.
