New York police clashed with the Occupy Wall Street protesters Wednesday, as dozens were arrested and police reportedly used pepper spray and even beating some demonstrators as they tried to rush a barricade near City Hall. Thousands showed up at Wednesday's rally, which started out peaceful until around 200 people tried to break through the police barricades and police used pepper spray and one officer was caught on video beating one protester with a billy club. The huge number at Wednesday’s protest was due to the support of many powerful unions, inlcuding such as the Transit Workers Union, and groups MoveOn.org, the Working Families Party, and United NY, with some union members coming in from out of state. Public-university students across the state walked out of classes Wednesday to show solidarity, and some smaller protests have popped up across the country.
