NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill on Thursday railed against President Trump’s proposed federal budget, claiming it would “eradicate” his police department’s counter-terrorism operations. “Under @POTUS budget, virtually all fed funding to #NYPD eradicated,” O’Neill warned on Twitter. “Entire counterterrorism apparatus in nation's top terror target hobbled.” Though Trump’s budget makes no specific mention of funding for the city’s police department, it does end federal funding transfers to cities that offer haven to undocumented immigrants. In a press conference earlier this year, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio—flanked by O’Neill and other officials—warned that withholding such federal money would “first and foremost fall on the NYPD.”
