Wikipedia entries for cases of police brutality—including pages for Eric Garner, Sean Bell, and Amadou Diallo—appear to have been edited from computers within the New York Police Department’s network at its 1 Police Plaza headquarters. Capital New York traced around 85 NYPD IP addresses to the Wikipedia edits, which have altered and attempted to delete entries on stop-and-frisk, scandals, and prominent city figures. In Garner’s case, phrases such as “Garner raised both his arms in the air” were changed to “Garner flailed his arms about as he spoke.” An NYPD spokesperson has said the “matter is under internal review.”
