President Obama has asked top BP officials, including Chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg, to come to the White House next Wednesday. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen wrote a letter to Svanberg saying that the company is “responsible for all costs associated with the response to the spill… as well as support long-term recovery efforts to ensure that all individuals and communities impacted by the spill are made whole.” However, there is no precedent for this kind of recompense for indirect costs such as unemployed oil workers’ salaries. This will be the first meeting between Obama and the head of BP since the Deepwater Horizon explosion.
