Obama Calls Clinton, Sanders With Congratulations

Offers high praise for both as Hillary claims victory.

President Barack Obama called Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders on Tuesday night to congratulate both Democratic candidates on their primary race. As news broke that Clinton had become the first woman to secure the Democratic nomination for president, Obama praised her “historic campaign” and noted that it had “inspired millions.” Sanders, who is reportedly laying off half his staff as he is ousted from the race, also received kind words from the president, who thanked the senator for “energizing millions of Americans with his commitment to issues like fighting economic inequality.” Sanders is set to meet with Obama at the White House on Thursday.
