Obama Convenes Nuclear Summit

President Obama convenes his meeting with officials from 47 other countries on Monday to confront what he calls the “single biggest threat to U.S. security”—unsecured nuclear stockpiles. His goal is to reach an agreement that will secure all nuclear materials from theft or diversion within four years. The New York Times calls these “quite limited goals” and faults the agenda for leaving off new construction of nuclear arms by other countries, particularly Pakistan. Asked about the threat of Pakistan’s new weapons, Obama said, “I feel confident that Pakistan has secured its nuclear weapons,” adding, “I am concerned about nuclear security all around the world, not just in Pakistan but everywhere.” The meeting is the largest gathering of world leaders by a U.S. host since 1945, when the U.N. was established.
