Obama Nominates Comey to Lead FBI

Former Justice Department official.

Obama announced today his formal nomination of “the perfect person” to act as the new director of the FBI, “a man who stands very tall (he’s 6 feet 8) for justice and the rule of law,” James Comey, as the next director of the FBI. If confirmed, Comey will replace Robert Mueller, who has headed the organization for the last 12 years, since a few days before the September 11 attacks. Comey, 52, served from 2003 to 2005 as a deputy attorney general under the Bush administration and is known for his staunch opposition to the warrant-less wiretapping program—unique credentials in light of Obama’s recent NSA spying scandal. The former federal prosecutor’s background has earned him bipartisan support, which should help his chances of being confirmed.
