Sonia from the Bronx and Ruth from Brooklyn should say hello to Elena from Manhattan. President Barack Obama nominated U.S. Solicitor General Elena Kagan as an associate justice for the Supreme Court. If confirmed, Kagan will be the third New York daughter on the high bench. She was considered a frontrunner in 2009 for the post that ultimately went to Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Also in 2009, the Senate confirmed Kagan's solicitor general appointment by a 61-31 vote; previously, she served as dean of Harvard Law School for six years. Kagan’s prospects for confirmation look strong; her hearings are expected to begin late next month.
