At his first fundraiser specifically for gay supporters, President Obama walked a fine line between supporting rights for same-sex couples and endorsing gay marriage. He offered praise for lawmakers in New York who are currently debating legislation to legalize gay marriage, saying that marriage has historically been decided at the state level. He also said he feels that gay couples “deserve the same legal rights as every other couple”—but he did not offer any kind of endorsement for gay marriage. Obama has previously said that he supports civil unions.
