The White House announced Monday that President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will host German Chancellor Angela Merkel and her husband, Joachim Sauer, for an official visit and state dinner in early June. The Obama administration noted the visit is an opportunity for the U.S. to reinforce its friendly relations with Germany, a key ally in Afghanistan and the largest economy in Europe. The White House also said the president and chancellor will discuss the war in Afghanistan and other topics, including Middle East unrest and efforts to stabilize the international economy. Obama will honor Merkel—the first female chancellor of Germany—with the Medal of Freedom.
