Obama Visits Gulf Beach

Head of State

Examines tar balls in Louisiana.

Summer hasn’t started, but Port Fourchon in Louisiana may not have many beach days left. President Obama visited the beach on Friday, where small tar balls are just beginning to wash ashore. "These are the tar balls that they're talking about," he said. "You can actually send out teams to pick up as they wash on shore.” The beach was surrounded with yellow police tape, and miles of booms and sandbags have been set up to protect the beach from the approaching oil. Obama was joined by the governors of Florida, Alabama, and Louisiana before leaving the beach for a formal briefing with Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Thad Allen.
