These numbers must make congressional Republicans’ hearts sink: According to The New York Times and The Washington Post, Obama has respective approval ratings of 63 and 68 percent. The Times poll also showed 77 percent of respondents were optimistic about Obama over the next four years, and 56 percent said Obama should prioritize passing the policies he campaigned on rather than working with Republicans in Congress. 73 percent of respondents in the Post, meanwhile, thought Obama was trying to compromise with congressional Republicans while only 34 percent thought Republicans were trying to compromise with Obama, and Democrats in Congress were given a 50 percent approval rating while Republicans in Congress were given only 38 percent approval.
