The British star, best known for playing Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise and X-Men’s Charles Xavier, rose to fame in America after decades of work in Britain’s classical theater. His health struggle was kept private. Stewart filmed his last performance as Professor X for Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Stewart promoted the upcoming film on his Instagram account.

Instead of flowers, Stewart’s family is asking that “memorial contributions may be made to Johns Hopkins Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center Fund and Alzheimer’s Foundation of America Caregiver Resources,” they wrote in an Instagram post announcing his passing.
