A week after Occupy Oakland’s home base in front of City Hall was raided by tear-gas-firing riot police, the protesters are back in their encampment and calling for a “general strike around the country, and around the world” on Wednesday. The crew is planning to march from City Hall to the Port of Oakland—one of the country’s busiest shipping ports—in an attempt to shut it down. Protesters have said they also intend to stage rallies at banks, businesses, schools, libraries, or any employer who attempts a crackdown on employee strikes. The city issued a bulletin on Monday reassuring business owners that police would be on hand should the demonstrations turn violent and urging them to stay open.
