A Detroit police sergeant has been suspended and might face charges after he was caught wearing a murder victim’s expensive, German-made watch. Sgt. Alex Vinson was in charge of a case involving an unknown murder victim who was found wearing the watch. The case went cold and the watch was photographed and put into storage—until this week, when homicide detectives decided to reopen the case while Vinson was in Idaho for advanced police training. The other detectives found that the watch in storage didn’t match the one in photographs. Instead, it was a cheaper model. Vinson was caught wearing the watch during the training session and directed to return home. “The case is ongoing, and the sergeant has been suspended while we prepare a warrant for review by prosecutors,” said Detroit police chief James Craig.
