Oil Reaches U.S. Shore

Disasters

Hits Chandeleur Islands in Louisiana.

After two weeks, oil from the leak in the Gulf of Mexico has reached the U.S. shore for the first time. It began washing up on the shores of the Chandeleur Islands of Louisiana on Thursday. The Chandeleurs are part of a national wildlife refuge and are a nesting ground for sea birds. Meanwhile, crews prepared to lower the 100-ton box onto the site of the oil leak; if successful, it could collect up to 85 percent of the oil from the leak.
