An oil refinery in Torrance, California, exploded Wednesday morning, shaking homes and causing minor injuries. The ExxonMobil Torrance Refinery “experienced an incident” at 8:50 a.m. PT, company officials said. “I thought it was an earthquake, like someone hit the back of my car,” resident Drew Magtoto told an NBC News affiliate in Los Angeles. Torrance school officials said students were being sheltered due to air-quality concerns, and local officials told residents to keep their windows shut. The explosion follows an oil-train explosion in West Virginia this week that forced as many as 1,000 people to evacuate.
