Oil Spill Closes Mississippi Ports

Some 65 river miles affected.

A 65-mile stretch of the Mississippi River has been shut down to ship traffic after an oil barge ran into a tugboat between Baton Rouge and New Orleans Saturday afternoon. No injuries have been reported and the barges were secured. It is not yet known how much oil was spilled. As a precaution, public intake of drinking water from the river has been halted.
