Alexander Imich died at the age of 111 Sunday. The zoologist lived on New York’s Upper West Side until his death, which his friends say was peaceful. Born February 4, 1903, Imich came to the U.S. after fleeing the Nazis invading his native Poland in the 1930s. Although he was certified as the world’s oldest man, there are 66 women who are older than he was. While Imich surmised that never drinking alcohol and gymnastics and swimming from his younger days contributed to his long life, he was not sure how he managed to become the oldest living man. In his humble way, he once told a local New York new station, “I don’t know, I simply didn’t die earlier.”
