One Shot to Death at Camp Lejeune

Officials say it was likely an accident.

Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, a Marine on guard duty at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina shot and killed a colleague in a guard shack with an M4 rifle. A male suspect is in custody, but neither he nor the victim have been identified. According to officials, the incident was likely the result of a negligent discharge. The investigation is ongoing. Still, Camp Lejeune’s spokesman sought to quickly distance the incident from the murder-suicide at Fort Hood last week that killed four. “We understand that people are at a state of heightened sensitivity, given what happened over at Fort Hood. It’s important that we convey that this is not a Fort Hood-like incident. It was an isolated incident that’s no longer active.”
