Rupert Murdoch has been “the bravest and most radical media owner in Britain in the last 40 years,” William Shawcross argues. Despite the phone-hacking scandal that has damaged Murdoch’s reputation, Shawcross writes that newspapers in Britain would not have been as successful or as varied without him, pointing out that Murdoch saved them from “the greedy print unions” and revived the Times Newspapers after he purchased that fledgling company. “In the eyes of those who hate him, Murdoch’s real crime is to have challenged liberal conventions in the US and here,” Shawcross concludes.
