Oregon's Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer for his handling of last year's 40-day standoff with armed militiamen at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Palmer attempted to convince officials to concede to the militants' requests, after meeting with the Ammon Bundy-led group. Department officials said they are looking into one of nine complaints filed since late January that were forwarded by a state agency that monitors police actions. Palmer did not respond to requests for comment about the investigation. He's been the county's sheriff since 2000.
