A U.S. diplomat involved in a fatal car crash in Pakistan has been barred from leaving the country amid deteriorating relations, according to local media reports. The incident came just a day after Pakistan announced it would restrict the movements of all U.S. diplomats in the country in retaliation for similar measures imposed on Pakistani diplomats in the U.S. It also followed a ruling by an Islamabad court that the unnamed U.S. diplomat be stripped of his immunity for the April 7 accident in which his attache struck and killed a 22-year-old driver, according to Pakistan’s The Nation and Express Tribune newspapers. A U.S. Air Force C130 had reportedly flown in on Friday to depart with the diplomat, but it was forced to take off without him on board. The State Department has confirmed Pakistan’s new restrictions on American diplomats but has yet to comment on reports of the U.S. diplomat barred from leaving.
