Pakistan may be preparing to attack North Waziristan, the tribal region dominated by the Taliban—as a result of pressure from the U.S., sources said. This invasion, sources cautioned, is months away and will be very limited in scope, but may repair the fractured U.S.-Pakistan relations since the raid that killed Osama bin Laden. Residents of North Waziristan said the army has started setting up checkpoints and shutting down roads across the mountainous region. Since bin Laden’s death, Pakistan has faced more attacks from the Pakistan Taliban, including when militants seized a key naval base for 15 hours, killing 10 security personnel.
