The organizers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have put forward breakdancing as a new event. It’s one of four sports Paris organizers will propose to the International Olympic Committee alongside surfing, climbing, and skateboarding—but those three will debut at the Tokyo Summer Games in 2020. Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, said the inclusion of breakdancing would make the Games more “urban” and “artistic.” Campaigners for squash, billiard sports, and chess all failed in their bids to have their events considered for inclusion. Breakdancing was included in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018. The IOC will make a decision by December 2020.
