An Afghan tribe that represents 400,000 people has agreed to support American efforts against Taliban insurgents in exchange for $1 million of direct aid in development projects. “The Taliban have been trying to destroy our tribe, and they are taking money from us, and they are taking our sons to fight,” a leader of the Shinwari tribe told The New York Times. “If they defy us now, we will defeat them.” The pact appears to be the first of its kind with an entire Pashtun tribe, but The Times warns the allegiances in the war-torn country are at best fragile.
