House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that she will appoint five Democrats to the special committee investigating the September 11, 2012 Benghazi attacks. Reps. Elijah Cummings, Adam Smith, Adam Schiff, Linda Sanchez, and Tammy Duckworth will join seven Republicans on the panel. Pelosi initially did not want to appoint any members because she didn’t want to dignify the investigation. However, fellow Democrats pushed her so that the party could have a voice on the committee. After talks with Speaker John Boehner on Tuesday and Wednesday, Pelosi decided to appoint members to “ensure fairness, transparency and balance with respect to the committee’s proceedings and operations,” said a Democratic aide.
