Vice President Mike Pence on Monday affirmed the United States’ commitment to the European Union, despite President Donald Trump’s previous harsh remarks about the alliance. “Today it’s my privilege on behalf of President Trump to express the strong commitment of the United States to continued cooperation and partnership with the European Union,” Pence told European Council President Donald Tusk in Brussels. Trump has criticized Europe and cheered Brexit, the United Kingdom’s eventual exit from the bloc. Tusk said he received a commitment from Pence on American support for NATO and “the idea of a united Europe.”
