Pennsylvania’s attorney general on Tuesday said he has proof the Vatican was complicit in covering up the sexual abuse of thousands of children in the state over several decades. Speaking on CBS This Morning about the findings of a grand-jury report on hundreds of “predator priests,” Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Catholic bishops throughout the state had documented allegations of abuse and sent them to the Vatican. “There are specific examples where when the abuse occurred, the priests would go, the bishops would go and lie to parishioners, lie to law enforcement, lie to the public, but then document all the abuse in secret archives that they would share oftentimes with the Vatican,” Shapiro said. “I can tell you that there is facts, there is evidence that takes this coverup and what occurred in Pennsylvania directly to the Vatican,” he said, declining to say whether the pope himself was implicated.
