As many as 15,000 Syrian rebels are needed to defeat ISIS, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff estimated Friday, but the United States is only training 5,000. General Martin Dempsey said between 12,000 and 15,000 rebels are requird to recapture territory in eastern Syria from ISIS. Dempsey added that the 5,000 being trained by the U.S. was never intended to represent the total number of troops needed. Congress last week approved a plan to train rebels, which Dempsey estimates could take 12 months.
