On Wednesday, top Pentagon officials warned that airstrikes on targets in Iraq would not be a quick and easy fix (which apparently some people unfamiliar with the last decade in Iraq believed). Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Appropriations Committee: “It’s not as easy as looking at an iPhone video of a convoy and then immediately striking.” Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel also advised against rushing to military action. Of airstrikes, he said “There has to be a reason for those. There has to be an objective. Where do you go with those?”
