If the punditocracy has been willing to suspend disbelief in its reviews of the GOP’s domestic-policy debates, it seems to have reached its limit with Saturday night’s foreign-policy face-off. Among a chorus of skeptics, The Daily Beast’s Peter Beinart points to the delusion and hypocrisy that dominated the debate. "When Republicans discuss foreign policy," he writes, "something miraculous happens: America’s economic constraints disappear." From canceling the Iraq withdrawal timetable to potentially bombing Iran, the candidates backed a host of expensive proposals that ignore America’s dire economic straits.
