The mayor of a southern Philippines town was among four people killed in a shooting at a Manila airport Friday. A gunman, who police believe was acting alone, opened fire at Mayor Ukol Talumpa and his escorts outside a terminal at the capital city’s main airport and then ran away to meet an accomplice on a getaway motorcycle. Talumpa’s wife, his 28-year-old niece, and an 18-month-old child were also killed in the attack. Five others were wounded, including at least one of the mayor’s security detail. Political violence is pervasive in the Philippines; Talumpa has reportedly survived assassination attempts in the past. Police believe the shooter was targeting him.
