In a city still recovering from a horrific fire that took the lives of two firefighters last April, a local veteran firefighter was killed in the line of duty. Philadelphia’s Capt. Michael Goodwin, 53, died late Saturday when the roof of a three-story fabric building on which he was fighting a blaze collapsed. Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers said the tragedy hit too close to home for the fragile community. “We have scars that are fresh, and indeed they have now been reopened.” Deputy Mayor Everett Gillison announced Sunday that the city’s flags would be flown at half-staff for the next month in Goodwin’s honor. A colleague who stepped in to try to save him—28-year-old Andrew Godlinski—suffered injuries.
