Search teams have detected “pings” underwater that may lead to AirAsia Flight 8501’s “black box” recorders amid the wreckage in the Java Sea, Indonesia’s military chief said Friday. Divers are attempting to raise the tail of the jetliner, which crashed Dec. 28. with 162 people on board. The black boxes, or data and cockpit voice recorders, are located in the plane’s tail and could provide officials with more information as to why the plane disappeared off the radar and went down, said Gen. Moeldoko, the head of Indonesia’s armed forces. A total of 48 bodies have been recovered to date, authorities said Friday. Some of the bodies were still strapped into the seats.
