Olympian Oscar Pistorius will be released on probation August 21, after a recommendation from the South African corrections department. The amputee athlete was sentenced to five years in prison in 2014 for culpable homicide in the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in the middle of the night. His attorneys argued that Pistorius thought she was an intruder when he shot her through a closed door. Under South African law, Pistorius became elgible for parole under “correctional supervision” after serving just a sixth of his sentence.
