Here’s something to get your mouth watering as we head toward the holiday. Slate’s David Plotz pens a personal essay on his family’s Turkey Day dessert tradition. His mother’s “Thanksgiving pie spectacle—enough pie to feed 80 or 100 guests—is excessive, bizarre, and sometimes even grotesque.” And yet it also sounds quite delicious. From traditional pumpkin pies to “experimental” pies like coffee-maple-walnut, the dessert table at the Plotz home overflows with a buffet of seasonal treats. He admits the whole thing has gotten out of hand, but that isn’t stopping him from passing it on to his children. His 8-year-old son’s favored recipe this year? Fruit salad pie.
