PM Launches Sydney Siege Review

Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced plans Wednesday for a joint federal and state review of the deadly hostage crisis that gripped Sydney early this week. The review will examine why gunman Man Haron Monis was granted citizenship in Australia, how he was able to access a gun, and why he dropped off a security watchlist in 2009. Monis, a self-styled cleric and convicted criminal out on bail for a string of violent offences, walked into a Sydney café Monday and held 17 hostages at gunpoint before he and two others were killed. The review’s findings could lead to political impact on hot-button issues such as immigration, gun laws, and security.
