Politicians Challenge Cameron Response

In the U.K., tensions are rising between political parties over how best to respond to the riots that have raged across the country. Many Tories are backing plans to cut benefits and evict the families of rioters. Meanwhile, Liberal Democrats are warning against being too reactionary. Simon Hughes, the Liberal Democrats' deputy leader, wrote, “We must not cut taxes for the rich or take away public support for the needy. We should be careful not to rush into knee-jerk solutions including over-hasty moves to change the social contract and approaches to sentences which may have the reverse effect to that intended.” Meanwhile, Kate Green, a Labour M.P., said, “That a whole family should be evicted because of the behavior of one family member, and their siblings should be made homeless, is not right at all.”
