Thanks to Pope Francis’s 20 most recent appointments, there are now more non-European than European cardinals in the Vatican’s electoral body for the first time. As part of his push for cardinals to more accurately reflect the Church globally, Francis appointed the first prelates from Myanmar, Tonga, and Ethiopia. Also notable among the appointees is a cardinal who has campaigned to protect indigenous populations in Panama.
