In an interview Friday, Pope Francis offered up an explanation for why he has decided to ditch the bulletproof “sardine-can” popemobile. “I cannot greet the people and tell them I love them inside a sardine can, even if it is glass,” he said. “For me it is a wall.” Francis has chosen to use open-top cars whereas Pope Benedict used the bulletproof car introduced after the assassination attempt on John Paul II in 1981. Perhaps the most shocking part of the explanation was when Francis admitted, “It is true something could happen to me but let’s be realistic, at my age I do not have much to lose. It is in God’s hands.” Talk about putting your faith in God!
