Pope Francis continues to shake things up in Vatican City with his appointment of longtime diplomat, Archbishop Pietro Parolin, to secretary of state, the second-most powerful position in the Vatican. Archbishop Parolin, 58, currently serves as the envoy to Venezuela. The pope’s choice to replace Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone was expected as it’s common for a new pope to change his inner circle. Still, Bertone has been criticized lately for poor management of his post, leading to scandals like the Vatileaks documents that showed discord among high-ranking church officials, and an investigation into money laundering in the Vatican Bank, which the secretary of state oversees.
