Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has asked the federal government to revoke a permit for an “alt-right” rally scheduled for Sunday, in the wake of this weekend’s fatal knife attack on a commuter train in the Oregon city. Two men were killed and a third critically wounded Friday when they intervened after young women were targeted by a man allegedly yelling hate speech. Wheeler said he’s also trying to make sure a permit isn’t issued for a June 10 protest, which is reportedly to be called #MarchAgainstSharia. “Our city is in mourning, our community’s anger is real, and the timing and subject of these events can only exacerbate an already difficult situation,” Wheeler said. Wheeler urged the organizers of the planned protests to cancel the events and asked their supporters to “stay away from Portland.”
