A French scientist said Tuesday that he’s found an image of a portrait underneath the Mona Lisa by using reflective light technology. Pascal Cotte said he’s spent more than a decade analyzing the Mona Lisa with a technique called layer amplification method, and claims to have discovered an earlier portrait hidden beneath the surface of the iconic painting. A reconstruction of the alleged painting shows another image of a sitter looking off to the side. Cotte, a co-founder of the Lumiere Technology in Paris, was granted access to the painting in 2004. Museum officials at the Louvre have declined to comment.
