Burglars raided dozens of boxes at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit in London over Easter weekend, in what could be the biggest British jewel heist ever. Police aren’t releasing the total amount of what was stolen from the 70 boxes, but estimate that the total value may be as much as £200 million (roughly $300 million). A burglar alarm sounded Friday, but a security guard told one box owner he “wasn’t paid enough” to investigate beyond peering through a window, according to one report. “There’s a sort of old-fashioned audacity about it,” Roy Ramm, a former officer with the elite “flying squad,” which investigates serious armed robberies, said of the raid.
